Deer Island joined us this year, and the group has made a good start on spaying and neutering more than 40 feral cats on the island. It is a particular challenge, since the cats need to be transported by truck and ferry to the mainland vet clinic to be spayed and neutered.
The geography of Charlotte County, with its islands, ridges, rural character and limited population, requires a special effort. But in less than two years Ca-r-ma Charlotte County has neutered/spayed more than 200 cats, as well as helping to care for several feral colonies.
In addition, some cats and kittens on the mainland, and on Deer Island, were adopted out over the summer. On Deer Island, a number of Siamese mix cats have found homes They are the descendants of an abandoned female Siamese.
The Saint Croix Courier published a major article about ca-r-ma Charlotte County in September 2009, featuring the Deer Island Cat rescue Team/ca-r-ma.

We are currently selling tickets on a donated painting “Farmyard”, and we will be at local supermarkets 1 or 2 weekends a month. We will again this summer have space at the St. Andrews Farmer’s market selling raffle tickets and other cat related items. Our “catnap” pads were very popular last year, they’ll be back again this summer!
The winners of our last two raffles were Bernadine Girard of St. George who won the “Sunflowers” painting, and Lois Hooper of Moores Mills who won the gift basket.
Ca-r-ma Charlotte County had a booth at the St. Stephen Fall Fair where we distributed information on feral cats, as well as having items to sell.
The Deer Island fundraising events are separate from our mainland group, and this active group of island volunteers had lobster roll sales and musical evenings to support their work.
Learning to care for homeless/feral cats is ongoing. In October we attended a Kit Jenkins workshop in Fredericton. Kit is from PetSmart Charities and is a dynamic speaker.
